Sarah Rector, an African-American girl born in the early 1900s in Oklahoma’s Indian Territory, had a strong belief that oil lay beneath the seemingly barren land she had been given. Her intuition proved accurate, attracting the attention of eager oil speculators. To protect her valuable oil-rich property, Sarah relied on the support of her family, friends, and a group of Texas wildcatters. Through their combined efforts, she successfully retained control of her land and went on to become one of the first African-American female millionaires in the United States—achieving this remarkable milestone at just eleven years old.
