Paramount, Skydance, and Disney Lodge Formal Complaints Against ByteDance Over Content Unauthorized Use
Leading Hollywood studios have formally accused Chinese technology giant ByteDance of widespread copyright violations. The company, which operates platforms such as Seedance and Seedream, is alleged to have used copyrighted works without authorization from rights holders to develop and train its generative AI models.
Collective Industry Protest Against ByteDance
On February 15, 2026, Paramount Pictures, Skydance Media, and other major studios collectively issued an official letter to ByteDance CEO Liang Rubo, demanding an immediate cease and desist from these illegal activities. The letter highlights the use of content from renowned franchises including South Park, Star Trek, The Godfather, and Dora the Explorer.
Disney’s Prior Complaint and Allegations
Previously, The Walt Disney Company filed a similar formal protest, accusing ByteDance of assembling a "pirated library" that features characters from Star Wars and Marvel, which the company claims are being exploited as if they are part of the public domain. Disney’s legal representatives described ByteDance’s actions as a deliberate and pervasive form of intellectual property theft.
Statement from Disney’s Legal Team
“ByteDance’s systematic plundering of copyrighted material is intentional, widespread, and entirely unacceptable,” stated David Singer, representing Disney, in an interview with Variety.
Viral AI-Generated Content Sparks Industry Concern
The controversy escalated following the appearance of a highly realistic AI-generated video on the Seedance 2.0 platform, depicting a dramatic fight scene between Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt set on a rooftop. The video’s uncanny realism quickly gained viral traction on social media, raising alarms within the industry.
Experts warn that while such AI-created videos demonstrate the technological advancements of generative AI, they also pose serious threats to actors’ rights and intellectual property protections.
Industry Response and Future Outlook
This week, the Motion Picture Association (MPA) issued a strong public condemnation of ByteDance’s practices, calling for an immediate halt to the alleged copyright infringements. As of now, ByteDance has not responded officially to these allegations.
Analysts anticipate that in the coming months, Hollywood studios may pursue joint legal action against ByteDance and that regulatory bodies could intensify oversight of AI technologies used within the entertainment sector. The ongoing dispute underscores the urgent need to establish clearer legal frameworks for AI-generated content rights and intellectual property protection in the digital age.
