Blumhouse and Atomic Monster Collaborate with Behaviour Interactive to Bring Cult Horror Video Game to the Big Screen
Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, two leading entertainment companies, have partnered with Canadian game developer Behaviour Interactive to develop a film adaptation of the acclaimed horror video game Dead by Daylight.
Seasoned Screenwriters Set to Craft a Dark and Intense Narrative
The upcoming movie will feature a screenplay penned by renowned writers David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Alexandre Aja. Johnson-McGoldrick, recognized for his work on The Conjuring universe—including the Annabelle films—brings extensive experience in creating compelling characters within terrifying scenarios. Aja, known for his visceral remakes such as The Hills Have Eyes and original thrillers like Piranha 3D, will contribute as a screenwriter, injecting the story with vibrant energy and chilling visual elements.
Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum has highlighted that this collaboration aims to strike a unique balance, blending rich character development with relentless suspense. The production team is currently in search of a director capable of translating this vision onto the screen.
The Origin and Expanding Universe of Dead by Daylight
Launched in 2016, Dead by Daylight quickly gained a dedicated following and became a cultural phenomenon. The game’s core gameplay involves four survivors attempting to escape from a brutal serial killer, with each match designed around asymmetric multiplayer mechanics. Over time, the game's universe has grown to include comic books, board games, and various other media, creating a rich and immersive horror ecosystem. Blumhouse secured the film rights in 2023, and with the addition of experienced screenwriters, the project is moving forward.
Industry insiders believe that pairing Johnson-McGoldrick’s storytelling expertise with Aja’s intense visual style could successfully appeal to both fans of the original game and horror aficionados seeking high-quality, suspenseful cinema. This combination promises a compelling adaptation that emphasizes both psychological depth and frightening spectacle.
