The lead actors for Disney's Rapunzel film have been announced
Disney Studios has officially cast the leads for its live-action remake of the beloved animated classic.
After months of speculation, the adaptation of the animated feature Tangled is moving forward. The studio has announced the actors chosen to bring the iconic characters to life, along with fresh insights about the creative team behind the new production.
Meet the Stars Playing Rapunzel and Flynn Rider
Australian actress Teagan Croft, recognized for her role as Rachel Roth in the series Titans, will step into the role of Rapunzel. Opposite her, Milo Manheim, best known from Disney’s Zombies franchise, has been cast as the charming adventurer Flynn Rider.
In the original 2010 animated film, the beloved characters were voiced by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi. For this live-action rendition, Disney is introducing a younger duo, aiming to connect with a fresh generation of fans.
Mother Gothel Casting Still Pending
The pivotal villainous role of Mother Gothel remains uncast. Although rumors circulated about Scarlett Johansson being in talks, Disney has yet to confirm any casting decisions for this key antagonist.
Project Revival Following a Brief Hiatus
Production on Tangled experienced a temporary pause after the disappointing box office performance of the live-action Snow White in early 2025, prompting Disney to reevaluate its approach to adapting animated classics. Nevertheless, by fall 2025, the studio resumed development and officially kicked off casting in December, signaling a renewed commitment to the project.
Director and Creative Team Behind the Scenes
Helming the film is Michael Gracey, acclaimed for directing the musical sensation The Greatest Showman. The script is based on a draft written by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong. While plot specifics remain tightly guarded, the adaptation is expected to honor the essence of the original narrative.
The production is overseen by producer Kristen Burr, with Lucy Kitada taking on the role of executive producer.
The Enduring Impact of the Original Animated Classic
The 2010 animated Tangled, inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale and directed by Byron Howard and Nathan Greno, stands as one of Disney’s most successful ventures of the decade. It earned over $590 million worldwide, and its hit song I See the Light garnered an Academy Award nomination.
Original music credits go to Alan Menken with lyrics by Glenn Slater, though it remains unconfirmed whether they will contribute to the live-action film’s soundtrack.
