George Clooney and his family have acquired French citizenship
George Clooney Cites Children's Privacy in Decision to Acquire French Citizenship
Renowned American actor George Clooney and his wife, esteemed human rights attorney Amal Clooney, have officially become naturalized citizens of France. This development was confirmed by a decree published last weekend in the official government publication, the Journal Officiel. Their twin children, Ella and Alexander, aged eight, have also been granted French citizenship.
The naturalization process followed formal procedures set by French authorities, reflecting the Clooney family’s enduring connection to France, where they frequently spend a significant amount of time.
Ownership of Provence Property and Deep Roots in France
The Clooneys own a notable property in southern France—an erstwhile vineyard estate known as Domaine du Canadel, located in Provence. Acquired in 2021, this estate has become one of their primary European residences.
French media highlight that George Clooney appreciates the region for its privacy, security, and serene environment—qualities he finds essential for raising a family away from intrusive public attention.
Motivations Behind the Citizenship Change
George Clooney has openly discussed his wish to protect his children from the relentless scrutiny of the media. In an interview with French radio station RTL in early December, he praised French laws that safeguard children's privacy.
“Here, children aren’t subject to being photographed, and there are no paparazzi lurking near school gates. That is what matters most to us,” Clooney stated.
Previously, in a conversation with Esquire magazine, he expressed his firm intention not to raise his children in Hollywood.
“I am determined not to bring up our kids in Los Angeles. I want to shield them from constant comparisons to other celebrity children,” he explained.
The Clooneys’ Embrace of a European Lifestyle
Besides their French estate, the couple owns a historic manor in the United Kingdom as well as the iconic villa on Lake Como in Italy, which George Clooney purchased in 2002. Despite multiple residences, the actor has previously described Provence as the place “where we feel happiest.”
By acquiring French citizenship, the Clooney family underscores their long-standing preference for a European lifestyle centered on privacy, security, and peaceful living, deliberately distancing themselves from the spotlight of Hollywood fame.
