Mel Gibson is filming a sequel to The Passion of the Christ using IMAX cameras

Mel Gibson’s upcoming project marks his most costly endeavor to date and will be presented as a two-part series.

Production is underway at the Cinecittà film studios in Rome for Mel Gibson’s ambitious follow-up to the iconic film The Passion of the Christ. Official reports confirm that a large portion of the movie is being captured with digital IMAX cameras, signaling plans for a broad theatrical release in this immersive format. The duology is slated to debut in 2027.

The decision to film using IMAX technology highlights the epic and visually grand nature of the project. Insiders reveal that the new installments will feature extensive visual effects, setting them apart from the more intimate tone of the original film.

Describing the project, Mel Gibson called it “super ambitious” and likened the experience to an “acid trip.” His vision expands well beyond conventional biblical storytelling, incorporating vast battle sequences between angels and demons and the dramatic portrayal of Jesus Christ’s descent into Hell. The filmmakers emphasize that the film’s rich symbolic imagery and visual depth justify its hefty budget.

The production will be split into two separate films, each with an estimated budget of $100–125 million, bringing the total cost close to $250 million. This makes the duology the most expensive film series in Gibson’s directing career.

A notable change from the original is the language used. Unlike The Passion of the Christ, which featured dialogue in Aramaic and Hebrew, the sequel’s cast will perform in English. This shift aims to enhance accessibility for a global audience and reduce cultural barriers for viewers.

Filming commenced in October and, due to the project’s scale and intricate visual effects, is expected to continue through June 2026. The first installment is scheduled to premiere on March 26, 2027, aligning with Good Friday. The second part will follow exactly 40 days later, on May 6, 2027, which coincides with the Feast of the Ascension.
