Jamie Lee Curtis missed out on The Exorcist because of her mother
Jamie Lee Curtis Reveals How Her Mother Shielded Her from an Early Horror Role
Jamie Lee Curtis, renowned for her iconic role in the legendary horror series Halloween, recently shared a surprising revelation: her foray into horror could have begun much earlier—back in the early 1970s—with one of the most chilling films ever made. However, her mother, actress Janet Lee, played a crucial role in steering her away from auditioning for The Exorcist.
During an interview on Drew Barrymore’s show, Curtis opened up about the family decision that significantly shaped her career path.
An Opportunity That Was Declined
Jamie Lee Curtis explained that when she was about 12 years old, the producer of The Exorcist reached out to Janet Lee with an invitation for her daughter to audition for the role of Regan, the possessed young girl central to the film’s terrifying plot.
“He called my mother and said, ‘I’m producing an adaptation of the book The Exorcist. Would you allow Jamie to audition?’ I was around twelve at the time. I was quite noticeable—full of character, not a quiet kid. Apparently, he saw me at a party and thought I’d be perfect,” Curtis recalled.
Janet Lee’s answer was firm and immediate: she declined without entertaining the idea of her daughter’s involvement in such a dark project.
Protecting Childhood Above All
Looking back, Jamie Lee Curtis expressed deep gratitude for her mother’s decision. She believes Janet Lee consciously chose to safeguard her daughter’s well-being over the lure of early stardom.
“Thank God, my mother really wanted me to have a proper childhood,” Curtis told Barrymore, who herself began acting at age seven with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Curtis admitted that only as an adult did she fully understand how emotionally taxing and potentially damaging it could have been to participate in such a grim film at such a young age.
How Things Unfolded
The coveted role of Regan MacNeil was eventually given to Linda Blair, catapulting Blair to international fame and earning her an Academy Award nomination. Jamie Lee Curtis, meanwhile, embraced the horror genre later in life—at age 19—starring as Laurie Strode in John Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween. This role cemented her status as a horror icon and earned her the nickname “Scream Queen.”
In 2022, Curtis brought her portrayal of Laurie Strode full circle by reprising the character in Halloween Ends, the concluding chapter of the recent trilogy.
Looking Ahead: The Future of The Exorcist
Fans of the franchise can look forward to a fresh take on the chilling narrative. The Exorcist reboot is set to be directed by acclaimed horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan, with production slated for February 2026. Rumors suggest that Scarlett Johansson will star in the lead role.
Ultimately, Janet Lee’s protective refusal decades ago not only shielded Jamie Lee Curtis from early exposure to dark cinematic themes but also allowed her to enter the horror world on her own terms—mature, self-aware, and ready to become a legend in her own right.
