Snowfalls did not prevent Avatar 3 from surpassing Avatar 2 in the US

The third chapter of James Cameron’s iconic saga demonstrates greater staying power during its second weekend compared to its predecessor.

Despite challenging weather conditions across key U.S. cities, the American box office remained robust over the final weekend of 2025. Leading the pack was the blockbuster “Avatar 3: Fire and Ash” from 20th Century Studios, which confidently maintained its top position in its second weekend following release.

Heavy rainfalls in Los Angeles and snowstorms in New York failed to significantly deter moviegoers or reduce theater attendance.

Gentler Drop in Weekend Two

By the close of its second weekend, “Avatar 3” experienced only a 33 percent decline in box office revenue from its debut weekend. This marks a notable improvement over the franchise’s previous sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which saw a sharper 52 percent drop during its second weekend in 2022.

While it didn’t quite match the historic minimal decline of the original “Avatar” in 2009— which recorded just a 1.8 percent decrease—the latest installment showcased a resilience rarely seen in today’s blockbuster landscape.

U.S. Revenue and Overall Box Office Strength

Preliminary figures indicate that “Avatar 3: Fire and Ash” earned approximately $84 million over the four-day weekend period. Its cumulative U.S. box office total reached $213.7 million by Sunday, underscoring strong audience engagement and promising longevity for the film’s theatrical run.

Audience Insights and Family Appeal

The audience composition revealed interesting trends. Among parents attending with children during the second weekend, 52 percent were mothers. Family viewers widely praised the lengthy 3-hour and 17-minute feature, with 90 percent of attendees affirming they “highly recommend” the movie.

Women over 25 gave the film the highest ratings, highlighting its broad appeal beyond the usual teenage and male demographics.

Box Office Contenders

The runner-up at the U.S. box office was another Disney release—the animated hit “Zootopia 2.” Now a month post-launch, it continues to show strong momentum, playing in 3,370 theaters with estimated earnings between $19 and $20 million. This may represent a 35 percent increase over the previous weekend’s revenue.

Disney’s Dominance in 2025

The impressive performances of both “Avatar 3” and “Zootopia 2” reflect Disney’s commanding position in 2025. Earlier this year, the company became the first major studio to surpass $6 billion in global box office revenue, further cementing its leadership in the worldwide film industry.
