Kevin Costner has been sued for non-payment of costume rental fees

Kevin Costner, the mastermind behind the western epic Horizons, is currently grappling with fresh financial setbacks.

Kevin Costner and his production company, Territory Pictures, are once again facing legal challenges tied to the making of the western saga Horizons. The firm Western Costume has filed a lawsuit accusing Costner and his company of failing to settle payments for costume rentals used during the filming of Horizons: Part 2.

The legal action was initiated in a California court, where documents reveal that Western Costume is seeking approximately $440,000 for outstanding invoices, alongside compensation for costumes returned in damaged condition following production.

Ongoing Financial Struggles Surrounding the Project

This latest lawsuit adds to the mounting financial and logistical hurdles faced by Costner’s ambitious Horizons project, which has encountered significant challenges over several years. Originally envisioned as a series of four films, bringing this vision to life has proven to be a formidable task.

The first installment had an estimated budget of around $100 million, but its worldwide box office earnings fell short, grossing just over $38.7 million. The second film, initially planned for release last year, has been postponed indefinitely with no new date announced.

Unsuccessful Efforts to Secure Additional Funding

In an attempt to keep the saga moving forward, Costner reportedly engaged in talks with investors from Saudi Arabia to obtain financing for the third and fourth chapters of the series. Unfortunately, these discussions did not culminate in a deal. As of last year, funding for Horizons 3 remained incomplete, putting the film’s production status in jeopardy.

It is important to note that this is not the first time Territory Pictures has faced legal issues over unpaid rental fees related to the project. Earlier this year, the company settled a similar lawsuit concerning unpaid charges for costumes and props used during the production of the first two films.

Looking Ahead

Despite these obstacles, Kevin Costner remains committed to his filmmaking ambitions. Construction has commenced on a new $100 million film studio in Utah, a collaborative venture between Territory Pictures and a regional developer. This initiative is viewed as a strategic, long-term investment aimed at establishing an independent production hub.
