James Cameron hinted at a reboot of Fantastic Voyage
James Cameron, director of Avatar 3, has teased an imminent announcement regarding a long-anticipated project that has been in development for nearly 30 years.
The filmmaker recently revealed promising updates about one of his most enduring and enigmatic endeavors—a remake of the iconic 1966 sci-fi classic Fantastic Voyage. Cameron hinted that an official announcement about this project could come “very soon.”
“We are collaborating with a director on a fresh script, and the project could see substantial progress within the next year,” Cameron disclosed, noting that he first began work on the remake in the late 1990s.
Back in 2016, Guillermo del Toro was confirmed as the director attached to the project. Over time, several prominent filmmakers expressed interest in helming the film, including Roland Emmerich, who envisioned shooting it in 3D, alongside Paul Greengrass and Shawn Levy.
Cameron himself drafted a script for the remake but shifted his focus to the expanding Avatar universe following the massive success of Titanic. The Fantastic Voyage remake was never canceled, only delayed.
Approximately three years ago, Guillermo del Toro reaffirmed his commitment to eventually direct the film. In late 2025, he mentioned three forthcoming projects—The Buried Giant and Fury among them—while deliberately withholding the title of the third, sparking renewed speculation about the Fantastic Voyage reboot.
Screenwriter David S. Goyer, who has also contributed to the project, offered fans further encouragement. Earlier this year, he revealed that production was on the brink of commencing:
“We were in pre-production, and it was very close... The project was paused during the previous Fox regime, but it was an incredible journey. I’m hopeful it will come to fruition someday.”
With these developments, the Fantastic Voyage remake—stuck in development limbo for almost three decades—appears to be gaining momentum once again. The original film, starring Raquel Welch, followed a team of scientists who invented technology to shrink humans to microscopic size for a perilous mission inside the human body.
