YouTube Cracks Down on AI-Generated Fake Movie Trailers

Google has launched an extensive crackdown on YouTube channels that distribute AI-generated fake movie trailers, which falsely presented themselves as official releases from prominent studios and deceived viewers. This move aligns with the platform’s enhanced policies against misleading content amid the surge of generative AI tools in media production.

Major Channels with Millions of Followers Removed

YouTube has permanently terminated two prominent channels, Screen Culture and KH Studio, both known for producing counterfeit trailers for upcoming films and series. Together, these channels boasted over two million subscribers and accumulated more than one billion views on their videos.

Earlier this year, after an investigation into their fake trailers, these channels were demonetized. At that point, creators added disclaimers such as “fan trailer” and “parody” in their video titles, which allowed them to regain ad revenue temporarily.

YouTube Enforces Ban Due to Policy Breaches

According to YouTube officials, in recent months, the channels removed the warning labels and reverted to presenting their content as authentic trailers. This action violated YouTube’s guidelines on spam and deceptive metadata, prompting the platform to impose a permanent ban without the option for reinstatement.

Hollywood Studios Benefit from Fake Content Revenue

An investigation revealed that some major Hollywood studios, including Warner Bros. Discovery and Sony, chose not to pursue copyright infringement claims. Instead, they reportedly requested YouTube to allocate advertising earnings from these fake trailers to their accounts. Studio representatives have yet to comment officially on this issue.

Disney’s Pressure Influences YouTube’s Actions

Notably, last week Disney sent a formal letter to Google demanding the removal of channels violating its copyrights on a large scale. Industry watchers believe this demand played a significant role in accelerating YouTube’s toughened enforcement measures.
