Screenwriter talks about canceled "hardcore" DC film about Lobo
Jason Fuchs revealed that his take on Deadpool would pale in comparison to his vision for Lobo.
Jason Fuchs, the Hollywood screenwriter and showrunner behind the series Welcome to Derry, recently opened up about a shelved DC Studios project centered on the cosmic bounty hunter Lobo. Fuchs described the planned film as one of the most extreme and uncompromising comic book adaptations ever conceived.
Although the movie was in active development with a distinct creative direction, it was ultimately scrapped during the script phase, mainly due to its intense tone and intended R rating.
Deadpool Would Have Felt Like a Family Movie
Fuchs likened the film’s concept to a wild fusion of well-known franchises combined with a visionary auteur’s touch. He summarized it as “Guardians of the Galaxy if Quentin Tarantino directed it.”
The screenplay was envisioned as a psychotic, ultraviolent R-rated tale packed with dark humor, graphic gore, and outrageous absurdity. Fuchs emphasized that, within this context, even Deadpool would seem tame enough to be considered family-friendly. This stark contrast was a major factor behind DC’s decision to halt the project.
Jason Momoa as Lobo
When asked about casting, Fuchs named the actor he had always pictured for the lead role: Jason Momoa. From the outset, Momoa was the definitive choice to embody Lobo’s larger-than-life character.
Fuchs also suggested that Michael Bay would have been the perfect director to bring the chaotic energy and explosive visuals to the film, crafting a provocative blockbuster with no compromises.
A Dark Parody of the "Martha" Scene
Fuchs shared an intriguing detail about a script scene that parodied the infamous “Martha” moment from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In this sequence, a villain pleads for mercy by revealing his mother’s name is Martha. Lobo, upon hearing his own mother shares the same name, pauses briefly before brutally killing his foe, coldly questioning why that should matter. This scene was designed as a sharp, brutal critique of one of DC’s most debated cinematic moments.
The Future of Lobo on Screen
Although the film was canceled, Fuchs remains hopeful that Lobo’s inclusion in Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe (DCU) could eventually lead to the character’s big-screen debut. He believes the cosmic bounty hunter has tremendous potential that might be realized in a more fitting format when the time is right.
