Google has made concessions to Disney and will delete all AI videos
Google Agrees to Disney’s Terms on Use of Its Characters in AI-Generated Content
Following an official demand from Disney earlier this week, Google has committed to adhering to the media giant’s requirements concerning the use of Disney characters in AI-generated videos. Disney requested the immediate removal of content featuring its intellectual property from YouTube and YouTube Shorts.
Removal of AI-Generated Videos Featuring Disney Characters
Google has already taken down numerous videos created with generative AI tools that showcased characters owned by Disney, including iconic figures like Mickey Mouse, Deadpool, as well as characters from Star Wars and The Simpsons. Disney’s letter pinpointed specific channels distributing this content, some of which used Google’s own AI platform, Veo, to produce the videos.
Link to Disney’s Licensing Deal with OpenAI
This enforcement action coincided with Disney’s recent agreement with OpenAI, granting licensing rights for over 200 of its characters to be used within the Sora neural network. This collaboration aims to provide a legal framework for users to generate short videos featuring Disney characters, thereby distinguishing authorized from unauthorized uses of its IP in artificial intelligence applications.
Prohibition on Using Disney Characters to Train Google’s AI Models
Beyond content removal, Disney also demanded that Google halt the use of its characters for training AI systems. The letter included an extensive list of characters from franchises such as Frozen, Moana, Toy Story, Lilo & Stitch, and more, specifying that their likenesses must be excluded from training datasets.
Google has agreed to comply fully with these demands and expressed its commitment to maintaining a positive partnership with Disney. “Our long-standing and mutually beneficial relationship with Disney remains a priority, and we will continue to collaborate closely,” Google representatives affirmed.
