Indian Penal Law
The term most commonly refers to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860, which served as India’s main criminal legislation outlining various offenses and their corresponding punishments. However, as of July 1, 2024, the IPC has been officially superseded by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), marking a significant update in India's criminal justice system.
