Sony Pictures has announced the appointment of Paul King as director for an upcoming feature film inspired by the popular Labubu designer toy series. Currently in the early stages of development, this project will see King not only directing but also producing alongside the studio Department M. Paul King brings a strong track record to the film, having recently directed the commercially successful movie Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet, which earned around $635 million globally. He is also well-known for directing the beloved Paddington films, which collectively garnered approximately $500 million at the box office and received critical acclaim. King further contributed to the Paddington franchise by co-writing and executive producing its third installment, affirming his expertise in family-friendly fantasy cinema. The Labubu brand originated roughly a decade ago, beginning as a series of illustrated books before evolving into a sought-after collectible toy line. These toys, produced exclusively by Chinese retailer Pop Mart, are sold in "blind boxes," meaning buyers do not know which specific figure they will receive beforehand. This unique sales approach has significantly contributed to Labubu’s widespread popularity and fostered a vibrant community of collectors. Labubu’s distinctive design is the creation of Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung, who relocated to the Netherlands during childhood. His artistic style draws heavily from both European and Asian folklore traditions. Labubu is part of Lung’s original series called "The Monsters," which features various fantasy characters with a consistent and recognizable aesthetic.
